March 16th – Patron Saint of San Clemente Festival

Here is how I spent my day yesterday with the San Clemente Patron Saint March 16th festival.  Again, this is a festival that I am not sure of the roots or history of.  It seems they have many festivals here.  Love it!

Here are some pics of the local guys (Pinocho, Carlos, etc erecting the greased pole for the climbing contest.

Of course, there was local fresh caught fish for sale at Ponocho’s.

There was a game the children played in the middle of the street.  It was a mix between dodge ball, criket and flip the caps.  Basically, there were 2 teams, one ball, several batlike objects to block the ball and about 100 bottle caps in the center of the field.  The object was to flip all the caps upright or face down, depending on which team you were on.  The most successful team batted the ball very far from the caps, giving the cap turner time to flip many caps at once.  It was fun for the crowd as well, especially when someone got hit by the ball.  There was no complaing or whining when hit with the ball.  No debating, not cheating, no complaining.  You got hit, you were out.  Later there was a round with girls and adults.  It got pretty intense.

Notice the boy in the background getting in a sneaky throw of the ball (ball hidden).

Next there was a spaghetti eating contest.  The boy who figured out to eat it with his hands instead of using a fork won!

The pole climbing was later in the day.  They really couldnt get any traction on this at all.  Standing on the shoulders was the best strategy it seems.

I took the puppies 1 by 1 to town in my backpack on the bike and found good homes for them.  Everyone got a kick out of me pulling a puppy out of my backpack.  We had 1 puppy given away as a prize for one of the contests.  I only have 1 left and I will give him to a lady next Sunday.

This town sure does have a lot of festivals and good times.  They know how to live it up!

Figuring it out…

  1. Your going to have to introduce a few of your own holidays. Perhaps a last day of the rain season fiesta?
